What are Extended Stock Trading Hours?

Extended-Hour Stock Trading in the United States refers to the trading that takes place on electronic stock market exchanges outside of the regular trading hours 51 in Eastern Time. After-Market Hours start when the market closes. After-Market Trading Hours launch at 4:00 PM EST and takes until 8:00 PM EST. Premarket trading session comes afterwards that ends at 9:30 AM EST.

Professional Stock Traders and 'market makers' usually do not participate in After-Hours Trading that can limit liquidity to high extent.

Extended Trading Hours allow investors to enter limit orders before or after standard market hours. Because this trading session is outside regular market hours when both market and limit orders can be placed, during Extended Stock Trading Hours only limit orders are accepted. Apart from this difference, during Extended Stock Trading Hours at most online brokerages trades are executed at normal online commission rate.

Put it plainly, After-Hours Trading refers to the period of time during which investors can buy or sell stocks despite the market is closed. Extended-Hours Trading is conducted by electronic networks either before or after the regular trading hours of the listing stock exchange.
