What is Bear Market?

A Bear Market is the period of a stock market when prices are declining or are expected to fall. Simply defined Bear Market is when market sentiment is pessimistic. Though a Bear Market may be defined in multiple ways, and experts don't come to agreement about what market conditions are considered a Bear Market, technically speaking the SEC specifies the bear market as a duration when a broad market index declines by 20% or more from its most recent high.

Because stock prices maintain volatility and they fall and rise continuously, Bear Market term represents an extended period of trading in which a huge number of stocks' price is declining. Bear Markets tend to last for months, quarters or even years. Bull markets tend to last for months, quarters or even years and they are a safe harbor of profit for bearish investors.

The reverse of a Bear Market is a bull market, when prices tend to rise.
