What is Bull Market?

A Bull Market is the period of a stock market when prices are rising or are expected to rise. Simply defined bull market is when market sentiment is optimistic. In Bull Markets stock market indexes reach new highs. Though a Bull Market may be defined in multiple ways, and experts don't come to agreement about what market conditions are considered a Bull Market, technically speaking the SEC specifies the bull market as a duration when market tends to be marked by a rise of 20% or more in a broad market index.

Because stock prices exhibit volatility and they rise and fall incessantly, Bull Market term represents an extended period of trading in which a great deal of stocks' price is rising. Bull markets tend to last for months, quarters or even years and they are an arena of profit for bullish investors.

The opposite of a Bull Market is a bear market, when prices tend to fall.

In a Bull Market when the economy is soaring, unemployment rate is low, labor market is not tight, inflation continues receding, consumers are buying and investors are optimistic, there are gains ahead, so it's time to buy stocks until Bull Market turns into bear market. A Bull Market may yield large profits for bull investors whereas bear market offers great opportunities for bear investors.

While there is a bunch of theories on where the bull market term stems from, it's generally believed that it comes from the resemblance to a bull attack when the bull thrusts its horns upward. Bull market essentially describes stock market growth. Investors can benefit from an uptrend tremendously if stock candidates are analyzed proficiently and risk management is elaborated appropriately.

Because stock markets are volatile by nature, investors should expect the stock prices fluctuate over time broadly, even during an uptrend. Therefore they need to maintain a long-term perspective during a Bull Market to be able to endure transient downticks in uptrend.
